The Healing Power Of Feng Shui, Part One (50).

Like Chinese medicine, Feng Shui is another discipline in Chinese culture that has been wildly misinterpreted. The problem is that people are not interested in the underlying reasons and practicality. They only like to believe in rumors and magic. Hence they get confused in the process.

Regarding Feng Shui, some people at one extreme laugh at it and think that it is purely superstition. At the other extreme, some people treat it like the bible. The large majority in the middle is subject to sway. Here, I wish to help you filter out what is rational, practical, and good for your health.

The Numbers Game
The meaning of numbers easily captures public fascination. The following shows where the meanings are derived from:
Zero: means none, the Chinese word being 零
One: means positive, derived from the Chinese phrase 一定
Two: means easy, in Cantonese it sounds like the word 易
Three: means living, in Cantonese it sounds like the word 生
Four: means death, derived from the Chinese sound of the word 死
Five: means negative, in Cantonese it sounds like the word 唔
Six: means wealth, in Cantonese, it sounds exactly like the word 祿
Seven: means death, derived from the Chinese custom of seven-day
paying respect after a persons death.
Eight: means lots of money, in Cantonese it sounds like the word 發
Nine: means longevity, derived from the Chinese sound of the word 久
Ten: means for sure, derived from the Chinese sound of the word 實

Do you see any rationality or practicality in the above? I only see the fun-loving wonderful Chinese culture. Note that the colorful Cantonese dialect exerts quite an influence on the whole Chinese culture, especially Feng Shui.

You can make more meanings by combination. For instance, thirteen is bad omen in Western culture. In Chinese, it sounds ten three, which means for sure living, which means good. So in this case we have a cultural conflict.

For your consideration, if you fly from New York to London, dont take a 747 or 777 because the numbers are so bad. Airbus 340 has only one good number out of three, so is a 767. Youd better take a boat then, but make sure that the departure date and time give you good numbers and good luck.

Hence you see that the numbers can drive you crazy if you are serious about them. My advice is that as a social being, you just play the numbers game for fun. Make sure you entertain your friends and get a good laugh. Note that pleasing people and having a laugh are also medicines for good health.

The Direction Game
When you ask a friend or a Feng Shui master about your residence, the subject of directional orientation must arise. You will get 100 different opinions from 100 people. You will be told that the front door should face a certain direction, for instance, the south. Since there are four directions and various ways of combination and correlation, you will be fascinated by the theories. Its up to you which one you want to believe. Remember to ask yourself some practical questions. You should not live in fear that something bad will happen if you dont act. You must realize that any good or bad thing can happen to you in life whether you understand Feng Shui or not.

Living with fear is never good for your health. Its no good either if you are forced to reorient your residence without a valid reason. If you have plenty of money to spend, that may be okay just for the fun of it. If you want to entertain your friends with Feng Shui theories, why not do it? Its fun!

The Color Game
Color is an important factor in daily life. You have to make a choice in many cases. People used to pick the color they like in a subjective manner. Suppose a Feng Shui master recommends the red color that is not your favorite. What do you do? Do you want to put up with something you dont feel comfortable? If so, that is not good for your health. For a simple choice like color, you should go with your instinct or taste, not a theory or foreign culture that you dont completely understand.

Going against your natural instinct or taste brings stress to your life. For simple decisions, just rely on your subjective view. You dont need anybody to help you. However, entertaining your friends with Feng Shui theories about colors is a different matter, because its fun and good for your health.

We are remodeling and my husband wants to put a flat screen tv above the fireplace, I am not sure whether I like this idea or not. I have always had a mirror above the fireplace..

I dont know anything about feng shui, but i do have a flatscreen tv above my fireplace. I installed a large 20″x 32″ picture over the front of the tv. it has a 6″ deep frame that allows it to completely cover the tv which projects out 5 ” from the wall. the picture is hinged at the top and has a hydrostatic arm to hold it up when opened (like the arm that holds open the hatch door of a mini-van). when the tv is off and the picture is down, no-one can tell there is anything behind it. I dont know why you couldnt mount a mirror over the tv following the same guideline.

I have been in a relationship with my current boyfriend for about 6 months now. Lately I have noticed I have become a little bit jealous at times. I have repositioned my bed as best as I can.It is difficult, I have a studio apartment. We work opposite hours and dont get much time to our selves. I have a 2 year old daughter, that stays with me 95% of the time as well.Which cures and advice do you recommend to help with the jealousy issue, and help make our relationship stronger. He is a great guy and I would hate to lose him because of my jealousy.
I did change my sleeping direction about a week ago, and have been feeling much better.Though, I still seem to be a little jealous at times.

First of all, try to sleep in one of your favorable directions, but if you can handle it in your studio, try your Yan Nian direction. Its the best direction for relations.

If you doesn’t know your directions, you can look them up using this Feng Shui Calculator:

Anyone know why?

“Plants do release CO2 in the process of respiration (burning energy) called the Krebs cycle. This process is not light dependent, therefore is continuous. Photosynthesis is the process responsible for the release of oxygen and is light dependent (takes place during daylight only). The chemical equations are equal but respiration contributes CO2 through the dark hours while photosynthesis is inactive. However, temperatures during the day and night directly affect the rates of each of these processes. In a normal climate; it is warmer during the day and cooler at night so the amount of O2 is much greater than the amount of CO2 in a 24 hour period. That is why we can breathe comfortably all night long.

It is very important to keep in mind that humans (& animals) release CO2 with every breath, all day and all night (and we are not harming ourselves by doing so). If a person lived in a greenhouse (full of spinach or soybeans) that was kept cool during the day then warm during the night, there would be some concern.

Did you know….90% of the Earth’s oxygen supply comes from the blue green algae in the Oceans?”
In addition to Cheryl Dawn’s explanation, let me direct you to The New York Times Learning Network with info on plants respiration.

Although the amount of CO2 released by plants at night is not outrageous, feng shui-wise, plants are not recommended for a small to mid-size bedroom.

In conclusion, here is a quote from Richard E. Barrans Jr., Ph.D. at PG Research Foundation in Darien, Illinois: “Plants generate carbon dioxide by much the same mechanism as animals. They combine glucose with oxygen in many steps to make carbon dioxide and water, giving them the energy they need to carry out their life processes.” ( Ask A Scientist (c) Botany Archive, US Department of Energy )
