Feng Shui

Feng Shui (pronounced “Fung Shway“) is the ancient Chinese art of placement.  Feng Shui literally translates to mean Wind Water and is represented by the symbols depicted here to the side.  Feng Shui can be used to improve your life by implementing Feng Shui principles which improve the flow of Qi (pronounced “Chi”) or life energy that is present in all things.  It is believed that this energy can become stagnant and that simple changes in our environment can unblock the flow of energy and improve our circumstances.

Feng Shui decorating can be used to bring more love, health or money into our lives.  Many of the Feng Shui cures are practical ideas about where objects can be placed in and around our homes to make them look more esthetically pleasing, safe and functional.

Anyone can use good Feng Shui to make the positive changes they want in their lives.  One of the primary tools of Feng Shui is the Bagua (pronounced “Bah Gwa”).  The Bagua is an eight sided diagram that includes eight elements that correspond to eight important areas of our lives.

Bagua

When objects around us are arranged in a way that allows Qi to flow properly then we will experience more success and fulfillment in all areas of our lives.

Feng Shui can be used in the home and workplace.  Many modern buildings are designed and decorated using Feng Shui principles.  There are many fun and easy ways to use Feng Shui to make our living, working and playing areas more enjoyable.  You’ll find many good Feng Shui ideas here and please feel free to comment on ones you have tried and like.

I have a 1 bed room 1 bath apartment on the second floor of my complex. My bed room has white walls but I’ve decorated the walls with a light yellow world map (because i like to travel), a Van Gogh "starry night" ( i love stars and the painting is soothing), a poster of "kissing the war goodbye" and some quotes on the wall. I have a midnight blue duvet for my goosedown and metallic yellow satin pillowcases 4 my pillows. Since I’ve feng shui-ed my apt, i have NOT been able to sleep like i used to. Before, as soon as my head hit the pillow, I’d pass out. Now, its a complete struggle. I dont know where my bed is facing but it faces the wall with the map and van gogh painting so i see these posters when i wake up. I USED to have just a white goose down and white pillows. Are the colors messing me up? What am i doing wrong?

Yes, bright colors are Yang energy and will definitely disrupt sleep. No Orange colors, Reds, Yellows, etc. In addition, books are Yang energy and will give you insomnia. I believe the map is Yang as well. You want to balance the Yang with the Yin, too much Yin is bad as well.

Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists, but his stuff is too phrenetic for a bedroom.

These are some of the most popular auspicious Chinese symbols and characters you are likely to come across, especially during the Chinese new year celebrations.do they really bring fortune…

Nope. I just go about my business as normal. If something good happens, then great. If not, I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

The "children area" in my apartment (according to the Bagua) is located right in my bathroom area. Everything in the bathroom is predominantly white and I can’t change this (I don’t want to paint the trimmings or replace the toilet and tub).

I read somewhere that there should be no white in the "children area", is this true? If it is, what can I do about tall the white in the bathroom space?

I don’t plan on having any children any time soon, because I am a single female student. However, I do want to embrace my inner child and have good relations with children (be able to get along with them) since I’m going to start teaching primary school soon.

Any suggestions as to how I can decorate this space to enhance my inner child?

On the contrary, white is the color associated with children so is fine for the area. The suggestions might be more about balancing the effect of the water in the bathroom. Bathrooms are especially sensitive in feng shui as they represent energy being flushed away – not just in the toilet but down the sink and tub drains. Earthy objects -either yellow in color or possibly some decorative stones) and/or and red-colored objects (which could also be accessories such as shower curtain, towels, decorative soaps or canisters) would serve to cut down on the water effect. You don’t have to go overboard just do it with intention.

I know this is asking a lot; but, I have been looking into feng shui online, first just as a way to improve my decorating skills and now to improve my life. It has gotten very confusing, what with the traditional and the western diciplines. I started rearranging and decorating to one chart only to find out that it is almost backwards from another chart !! Then there is the buagua, the elements and my birth number. I am very confused !!
Can anyone possible put some of this in more simple terms for me, without losing too much of the essence of the dicipline ??

If there is a meaningful answer, you’re not likely to find it in a science category.
